Have Pride, Be Passionate About Your Work

Over the years I constantly try to create and shape my own personal mission statement. And every time I came up with something it just felt forced. Like what comes out in Microsoft Word when you have writer's block. But I think I finally have something. It's so damn simplistic, but it's perfection in its simplicity:

Have Pride, Be Passionate About Your Work

Having a personal mission statement or motto is important. To me it's a never ending goal. And I think two things that are the most important in life are defined by the above statement: pride and passion. The two of them really go hand in hand.

You know that statement?

Anything worth doing is worth doing well

See...that's nice and everything. But it's not enough. Perhaps some refactoring is in order.

Anything worth doing is worth doing exceptionally well.

Now that's better! Have pride in everything that you do. Afterall it represents you. And be passionate about it. Passion and enthusiasm are infectious. I think when people see that you love your job, hobby, or whatever...it's inspiring.

Pardon me while I use a football example: Ray Lewis. The man is the heart and soul of the Baltimore Ravens. And he's not the most talented man on the roster. At least not any more. But that doesn't matter. That man commands respect. He exudes confidence. He exudes passion. And he has a ton of pride. Take away your preconceived notions about the man because of the murder trial in 2000. One of my favourite Ray Lewis quotes:

There's a spirit that grabs me, and it's in every one of you guys, but the questions is, how much time are we wasting?

Yes, how much time are you wasting? I don't care what your profession is. I don't care what your hobby is. Pride and passion should drive you to do the little things well (okay, exceptionally well). Because after all:

Greatness is a lot of small things done well, stacked up on each other.

I dare you to find someting great that isn't made up of great components.

And I dare you to find something great that wasn't created by prideful and passionate people.

So be prideful. And be passionate. About every little thing. And great things will follow. Hopefully exceptionally great things.
